How 2026 RRSP room is estimated

New room = the lesser of 18% of last year’s earned income and the annual dollar limit. For 2026 that limit is $33,810, so you need about $187,833 of 2025 earned income to hit the cap. Add unused room from earlier years. Subtract the pension adjustment (PA) if you have a workplace pension. The CRA prints the official deduction limit on your notice of assessment and in My Account.

Earned income for this purpose usually includes employment and net self-employment, not investment income. Over-contributions above a $2,000 cushion can be taxed at 1% per month. Confirm on Canada.ca RRSP limits before you contribute.

Worked example

If 2025 earned income was $80,000, 18% is $14,400, under the $33,810 cap, so new 2026 room is $14,400 before unused room and pension adjustment. Hitting the $33,810 cap needs about $187,833 of 2025 earned income.

The CRA notice of assessment is the legal limit. Unused room carries forward. A $2,000 over-contribution cushion exists; above that, 1% per month. Deadline for 2026 contributions is 1 March 2027. Confirm on Canada.ca.

New room is a cap, then a pension adjustment

New RRSP room for 2026 is the lesser of 18 percent of 2025 earned income and $33,810. On $60,000 of earned income, 18 percent is $10,800, which is under the cap, so the income piece is $10,800. A pension adjustment of $4,200 comes off. With no unused room carried forward, estimated room is $6,600. Hitting the $33,810 cap takes 33,810 ÷ 0.18 = $187,833.33 of 2025 earned income. Income above that does not raise the new-room piece. Unused room from earlier years is added after the cap, and it can push the total above $33,810. That is allowed. The cap limits the new slice, not the pile you already had.

Earned income here is mostly employment and net self-employment. Interest, dividends, and most pension income do not create RRSP room. A workplace pension shows up twice in real life: the pension adjustment on the T4 reduces next year’s room, and this form has a box for that PA. Leave it at 0 only when the slip says 0.

The notice of assessment is the legal number

CRA prints the deduction limit on the notice of assessment and in My Account. If that figure and this estimate disagree, contribute from the notice. A $2,000 lifetime cushion sits above the limit. Above that cushion, over-contributions can be taxed at 1 percent a month. The deadline for contributions you want to deduct on the 2026 return is 1 March 2027. Room is not the same thing as a refund. The refund depends on your marginal rate and on whether you deduct the contribution this year. This page does not compute tax. The official limit table is on Canada.ca. The 2026 dollar limit used here is $33,810.

The dollar cap on this page was read again on 15 October 2026. The log is the figures check. Your notice of assessment still wins.
