The formula

Annual salary ≈ hourly rate × hours per week × paid weeks. Weekly pay is rate × hours. Monthly pay is annual ÷ 12. This ignores overtime, bonuses, and benefits.

A $25/hour job at 40 hours and 52 weeks is $52,000 a year before tax. If you only work 48 weeks, it is $48,000.

Worked example

At $28/hour, 40 hours, 52 paid weeks: $58,240 a year, about $1,120 a week, about $4,853 a month if you divide by 12.

If you take two unpaid weeks, use 50 weeks: $56,000. Overtime, shift premiums, and a workplace pension are extra. Compare this gross figure to a job ad that lists salary, not to a net pay stub.

The offer that is not 40 hours

A posting that says $19.75 an hour is not $41,000 until you know the week. At 37.5 hours, which is a common office week in Canada, paid weeks of 52 give 19.75 × 37.5 × 52 = $38,512.50 a year. Divide by 12 and the month is about $3,209. The same rate at 40 hours is 19.75 × 2,080 = $41,080. The $2,500 gap is the 2.5 hours a week, not a different wage.

Two unpaid weeks means 50 in the weeks box, not 52. That same 37.5-hour job becomes 19.75 × 37.5 × 50 = $37,031.25. Vacation pay, if it is a percent on top of wages, is not inside this product. The vacation pay calculator applies 4% or 6% to a wage total you already have.

What a salary comparison hides

This page is gross. It does not withhold income tax, CPP, or EI, and it does not add a shift premium, overtime, or a bonus. A $38,512 hourly year and a $38,512 salaried year can deposit different amounts if one job pays overtime and the other expects unpaid evenings. Use the result to line up two job ads. Use a pay stub, not this page, to see what lands in the account.

Overtime sits outside the year

The weeks box assumes every week is the same length. Six hours of overtime in ten of those weeks is not 6 extra hours spread across 52. It is 60 hours at whatever multiplier the contract pays, and this page will not apply 1.5. Compute the straight year here, then price the extra hours on the overtime page, and add the gross figures yourself. A hiring bonus paid once is the same kind of addition: leave it out of the hourly rate. Folding a $2,000 bonus into the rate makes every future year look higher, and the bonus does not repeat. Benefits the employer pays, such as a pension match, are not wages either. Note them beside the result. Do not type them into the rate.

Where this sits on a paycheque

Gross pay is the start of the story. CPP, EI, vacation pay, and tax are not in this form. A paycheque is not the hourly rate times the hours separates those pieces with the 2026 figures.

Common questions

Is monthly pay always annual divided by 12?

For a quick estimate, yes. Some employers pay every two weeks (26 cheques) so a month can have two or three pay days.

Should I include overtime?

This page is straight-time only. Add overtime on the overtime calculator, then add it to the annual figure.
