Weighted grade formula

Course % = sum(score × weight) ÷ sum(weights). If midterm is 30% and you scored 80, that item contributes 24 points. Weights do not have to add to 100 if some work is still missing — the result is your average on the work entered.

Worked example

Midterm 80% worth 30%, exam 70% worth 40%, labs 90% worth 30%: course mark = 0.30×80 + 0.40×70 + 0.30×90 = 79%.

If the syllabus drops the lowest quiz, remove that line before you total. A syllabus that says “exam 40% of the remaining grade” after a midterm is a different structure — this page needs weights that add to 100%.

A zero that is really “not written yet”

The course percent is the sum of (score × weight) divided by the sum of the weights you left on the page. Homework at 92 percent worth 20, and a midterm at 81 percent worth 30, with the final row removed, is (92 × 20 + 81 × 30) ÷ 50 = 4,270 ÷ 50 = 85.4 percent. Leave the final on the page at 0 percent with a weight of 50 and the same work becomes (4,270 + 0) ÷ 100 = 42.7 percent. The form treated the unwritten final as a zero. If the work is not done, delete the row or set its weight to 0. A weight of 50 and a score of 0 means you sat the exam and scored nothing.

Once the final is a real 74 percent at weight 50, the course is (4,270 + 74 × 50) ÷ 100 = 79.7 percent. Weights do not have to add to 100 while work is still outstanding. The line under the result tells you the total weight you actually entered. If the syllabus weights add to 100 and yours do not, you left something out or double-counted.

Points, dropped quizzes, and the final you need

A syllabus that uses points rather than percents can go in the same boxes: put the points earned in the score and the points possible in the weight, and the ratio is the same shape. A rule that drops the lowest quiz means you delete that row before you calculate. This page will not drop it for you. To see what you need on a final, put the final weight in, try a score, and read the course percent. Change the trial score until you hit the target. That is a what-if, not a promise that the exam is curved. GPA, which is letters and credits rather than percents, is the GPA calculator.

Common questions

What if my syllabus uses points, not percents?

Put the same number in score and treat weight as the point value of that assignment.

Can I see what I need on the final?

Enter current items, then add the final with a trial score until the total hits your target.
